You Can Take A Child Backpacking!
Mind is AllThe thought of taking a child backpacking can be intimidating at first even to people who have packed their whole life. This hesitation is unfortunate for a number of reasons. First and foremost, children love to go on an adventure and explore the natural environment. You do have options if you wish to begin exposing your children to the hobby of backpacking if you want to. You first you must find the perfect backpack to fit the size of your child. Here are some suggestions that may work for your child. Small children will only be able to carry a small childrens Camelpak to carry their own water, a couple snacks, an emergency blanket, and a whistle. When the child grows they will begin to be able to carry more of their own gear. As a matter of fact ,in just a few years, you will be able to pack them up with their own clothing, and maybe even an ultra light sleeping bag. You will see your child grow from a small camelbak to a daypack or a school backpack for your trips with them. By the time they are 9 they may even fit into their first rigid pack depending on their size! By then hopefully they will be as hooked as you are. Your childs safety must be taken into consideration though. Although you can never guarantee anything in life, you can do what you can to keep them safe. Just make sure your kids know a few simple rules to help keep them safe. It is very important for a child to understand they must stay in sight. If they ever find they are lost they need to sit down right where they are, and blow a safety whistle loudly so they can be found. Tell them how to use an emergency blanket correctly and try to teach them not to panic. Both adults and children alike can share this hobby in a safe mannor. Plus what a bonus to be able to experience the world new through your child's eyes. You child will also love the time they get to spend with you!
