If you've decided to start a meditation practice, but are unsure where to start, you'll be relieved to hear it's easy to do. The following guidelines will help you establish a meditation practice that you’ll be sure to find rewarding.

You'll want to start by learning about the many different types of meditation. Most people benefit from a weekend-long meditation retreat or an evening at a local meditation center where you can participate in group sessions and hear lecturers. When you hear about other people's experiences with meditation and witness group meditation and instruction, you will understand the philosophies better.

To get the most out of your meditation practice, spend time setting up a special spot. If you have the space, section off one piece of your living area for the purpose of meditation. Ideal spots are sunrooms, home offices, or a corner in your bedroom. Choose the colors for this space carefully, as color influences mood significantly. Make sure you have a comfortable place to sit for long periods of time; a meditation rug or set of cushions may be helpful. You will want to set up a timer of some sort so you will never be distracted by the time, but can trust the alarm to go off when your time is up.

Depending on what type of meditation practice you wish to pursue, you may want to invest in music or tuning bowls. You may also wish to purchase a scented candle or incense to enhance the experience. You can set up a meditation alter consisting of significant stones, crystals, statues, and mementos, if this inspires you. Arrange your meditation space in such a way that it makes you feel relaxed and in touch with your spiritual side.

Once you have everything set up, begin your practice with a commitment to a set amount of time each day. Set yourself up in a relaxed position, making sure you are properly supported. Begin your practice with a session focused on your breath or a single mantra. As you establish a daily meditation practice, you'll notice your ability to focus and to handle stress will improve.
