Carpal tunnel syndrome can cause pain in the wrists and arms. Numbness of the fingers is also common among people suffering with this syndrome. Doctors may first prescribe pain killers along with recommending wearing a brace. Surgery is also sometimes preformed to relieve carpal tunnel pain. You can do some things to greatly decrease your chances of surgery.

You may be wondering what you can do to reduce your chances of getting carpal tunnel in the first place. Believe it or not body position and posture is your first line of defence. Occupational therapists recommend keeping your wrists in a neutral position at all times if you can when working. Wrist neutral means that your wrist is centered and not bent or kinked to far in any direction. This is one reason that doctors often recommend braces to help to keep your wrist in a neutral position. Another way of looking at a neutral position is the way piano players play.  Their wrists are pretty flat when looked at from the side. There are no severe angles to be seen in their wrists.

Your chances of suffering from the syndrome are even further reduced if you learn to stretch out and do self massage. By using a combination of massage therapy, stretches, and correct body ergonomics you can greatly reduce your chances of suffering with carpal tunnel syndrome. Doing these things at least once a day if not more often then that really doesn't take that much time and will save your body in the end. Make sure if you work in a profession that may contribute to carpal tunnel that you be proactive about avoiding it.
