Have you made the resolution to give up soft drinks for health drinks? Just because a beverage is labeled as a health drink doesn't mean it's the best drink for your situation. Use these guidelines to choose the best health drinks for you.
Before we get started, you need to establish why you need the health drink. Do you want to drink a health drink in place of a meal? Are you drinking this to help you build muscle after a hard workout? Are you looking for a health drink that will help you hydrate because of excessive exercise or extreme weather? Or did you just want a drink? You always want to check health drink labels to make sure they really are all natural and made from good fruits and veggies, but you'll also want to match needs and ingredients as follows.
If you're drinking the health drink as a meal replacement, you will want to take into account calories. This is especially important if you are following a diet with restricted calories. Any good meal replacement health drink will be high in protein and somewhat low in sugar. Choose fat over sugar, and if possible, choose a drink that actually contains some fiber (or mix in a little Metamucil). Fat, protein, and fiber will help you feel full; high sugar drinks won’t cut it as a meal.
If you've just finished a weight lifting routine, you'll need a recovery drink with lots of protein. You can buy prepared recovery drinks or make your own with protein powder.
If you need to hydrate after a tough cardio workout, you’ll want water, sugar, and electrolytes more than anything else.
If you just need something to drink, you’ll want to opt for a low calorie, low sugar health drink. You want to leave room in your diet for calories you get to eat, rather than drinking all your calories.
Have fun checking out the many different health drinks as you work towards a healthier you.
